Salsa
Candela |
|
SALSA CANDELA
Over the past few years 11-piece Afro-Cuban band
Salsa Candela has had the crowds dancing at
venues as varied as Kirstenbosch Gardens, Rhodes House,
the Green Dolphin, Mannenberg's, Curve Bar and the
Jazzathon. While most of the line-up remains the same
for 2005, there are some welcome and exciting additions
to the band.
There's the original
expert team of percussionists:
Dave Novis on bongos, Steve Forder on congas and Keith
Coxon on timbales; a dynamic brass section consisting of
Vaughan Fransch on trumpet, Nick Le Roux on sax, and Sim
Yarrow on trombone, now augmented with the sweet sound
of Carina Bruwer on flute and piccolo; a powerhouse
rhythm section of Ryan Grogan on keyboards and Richard
Weissenberg on bass; and a vocal treat with a selection
of female vocalists from Tina Gordon, Denay Willie,
Danni Bitton and Neisha Harley.
The Latin sound has taken
off in the Cape over the last few years,
but still audiences only
seldomly get the chance to experience the power of a
full-sized Latin band. Come along and experience the
contagious rhythm and infectious grooves of Cuba with
the upbeat energy of Salsa Candela, focusing on
authentic Afro-Caribbean music, which has recently been
popularised by the release of the movie “Buena Vista
Social Club”.
The band,
based in Cape Town plays Afro-Cuban genres such as the
Son-montuno, Guaracha and Mambo (which is collectively
referred to as Salsa when fused with jazz). Other
popular Afro-Cuban styles including the Cha-cha and
Rumba are part of the repertoire. |
